Topaz is a very durable and thus popular gemstone having a hardness of 8, however, it is somewhat brittle and therefore care from knocks should be taken. The most common color is Yellow with a red tint, while the most valuable is Pink.
The most important supply areas are Brazil (Minas Gerais, Esperito Santo), Sri Lanka, Burma, and Russia (Urals). Not as important are deposits in Australia, Japan, Malagasy Republic, Mexico, Nigeria, Rhodesia, Namibia, and the United States. Light Blue Topazes are also found in Northern Ireland, Scotland, and England.
Topaz is offered in a wide array of colors and therefore is extremely collectible.
The Golden with Red Flash Topaz is considered the birthstone for November.
