Opal, although considered by some to bring bad luck, is by far one of the most popular gemstone varieties. Although found in great abundance, the finer qualities command a premium price. Opal is sensitive to pressure and knocks and must be handled carefully. Also if allowed to "dry out," it will crack and its color will disappear. There are two groups of precious opals, one being the white base or milky opals and the other being the rarer black opals. Both have color plays of reds, greens, and blues. Main deposits are in Czechoslovakia, Australia, Brazil, Guatemala, Honduras, Japan, and the U. S. (Nevada). Often a thin slice of opal is mounted on a piece of onyx which is called a doublet. Another very popular way to find and display the best color is by way of a triplet which adds a protective lawyer of quartz or rock crystal on the top of a doublet.

Fire Opal, yet another style of opal, is a name derived from its orange color. The best qualities are clear or transparent while the vast majority are milky, the most important deposits are in Mexico, Brazil, Guatemala, Honduras, United States, Western Australia and Turkey. Extremely popular jewelry gemstone. Opal is the birthstone for October.
