Beryl as a gemstone refers to all varieties of the Beryl group which are not Emerald-Green or Aquamarine-Blue. Its hardness is 7 1/2 - 8 however they are brittle therefore care must be taken against knocks. Beryl is offered in a variety of colors many or which have special names in the trade.
Morganite, a soft pink to violet Beryl, is also called Pink Beryl. Lower qualities can be improved by heating, important deposits are in Brazil, Malagasy Republic, Mozambique, Rhodesia, Namibia, and in the United States (California). A very popular gemstone of late.
