Iolite is usually a purplish blue when cut properly. It is readily available and surprisingly affordable. The finest, most acceptable color is a rich blue.
Iolite is mined in India, Sri Lanka, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Brazil. It was mined hundreds of years ago by the Vikings from deposits in Norway and Greenland.
Iolite is relatively hard and should be protected from blows.
It demonstrates extreme pleochroism by showing violetish blue from one angle, clear as water from another angle, and honey yellow from yet another. It must be oriented properly or its color will not show to its best advantage.
