Beryl as a gemstone refers to all varieties of the Beryl group which are not Emerald-Green or Aquamarine-Blue. Its hardness is 7 1/2 - 8 however they are brittle therefore care must be taken against knocks. Beryl is offered in a variety of colors many or which have special names in the trade.
Heliodor is a yellow / green variety of Beryl. Important deposits in Namibia, Brazil, and the Malagasy Republic. It is known to be radioactive.
