Helenite, also known as Mt. St. Helens obsidian and Emerald or Ruby obsidianite, is made from fused volcanic rock dust from Mt. St. Helens in Washington.
The beautiful gem-like stone is fused from rock gathered after the 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens. Experts have indicated that the material ejected came from 10-20 miles below the Earth's surface. The volcanic rock once pulverized is then fused at temperatures of 2700 degrees ft.
Helenite is available in various shades of red and green. Although man made it has gained great popularity among collectors and the jewelry world.
