Almandine, with a hardness of 7 1/2, is red with a violet tine. The main deposits are in Sri Lanka, India, Afghanistan, Brazil, Austria, and Czechoslovakia.

Demantoid is the green to Emerald-green variety of Garnet and is also the most valuable. Most important deposit is in the Urals. Very popular among investors.

Hessonite is the brown-orange variety of Grossular Garnet. Its hardness is 7 to 7 1/2. It is also nicknamed "Cinnamon Stone" due to its oily look. The main deposit is in Sri Lanka.

Pyrope, sometimes mistakenly called Cape Ruby, is so-called because of its fiery red color. The main deposits are in Czechoslovakia, South Africa, and Australia. The hardness of Pyrope Garnet varies between 7 and 7 1/2.

Rhodolite is the rose red or violet shade of Pyrope. It is most importantly found in the United States (North Carolina), Sri Lanka, Brazil, Zambia, and Tanzania. This is one of the most popular of the Garnets today. Very desirable and collectible.

Spessartite, with a hardness of 7 to 7 1/2, is the orange to red-brown variety of garnet. Main sights are in Sri Lanka, Brazil, United States, Malagasy Republic, and Sweden. A very beautiful variety with lots of fire.
