Citrine with a hardness of 7 is a very popular gemstone for jewelry. It is often substituted in place of topaz as the birthstone for November. Natural Citrine is most commonly light yellow. Most commercial Citrines are heat-treated Amethyst or Smokey Quartz as natural Citrine is rare. Citrine is found in Brazil, Malagasy Republic, The United States (Pikes Peak, Colorado), Spain, Russia, France and Scotland. Citrine is offered in a variety of yellow hues including red-yellow, orange-yellow, and gold-brown. Extremely popular, very collectible and affordable.
