Beryl as a gemstone refers to all varieties of the Beryl group which are not Emerald-Green or Aquamarine-Blue. Its hardness is 7 1/2 - 8 however they are brittle therefore care must be taken against knocks. Beryl is offered in a variety of colors many or which have special names in the trade.
Goshenite is the colorless form of Beryl and has been used as a substitute for Diamond. Popular as a collector gemstone.
