Andalusite is named after Andalusia, the province of Spain where it was first discovered.
Andalusite is pleochroic, different colors (orangy brown to yellowish green or gold) in different directions. When oriented properly, it appears as no other gemstone, with patterns of color dancing around the facets.
Andalusite is mined primarily in Brazil and Sri Lanka. It is often called "poor mans alexandrite," however, in reality it has no resemblance.
For those who like earth tones, Andalusite is most appealing. Because of its color and durability, it is especially appropriate for mens jewelry.
